Antique French confitpot
Large French confit pot from the 19th century (1800-1900), originating from the southwest of France or Provence.
The ochre-yellow glaze was applied only to the top and inside of the pot. The unglazed bottom of the pot served a purely practical purpose. These pots were filled with confit meat (such as duck or goose) and covered with a thick layer of fat, and then buried in the cool cellar floor up to the glaze rim to preserve the food for months.
The slight wear on the rims and handles, and the drips of glaze that have run down, give the pot its coveted rustic character and provide evidence of age.
