Swedish wooden butter barrel in original blue paint
Swedish antique butter barrel.
The barrel has a beautiful aged blue color and has acquired a great patina through intensive use. It is constructed from wooden staves held together by wooden hoops, which is typical of Swedish craftsmanship.
The unique closing mechanism is also very ingenious. Two of the opposite staves stick up and have a hole. The lid slides between these and is locked by a wooden pin.
These barrels were mainly used to transport valuable dairy products such as butter.
