Antique Swedish hand-woven cheese mold - 19th century
Traditionally woven Swedish cheese mold with a warm, weathered color.
These molds were woven from thin, flexible strips of wood made of chipboard, tree root, or willow; the weave was so strong and tight that the baskets were sturdy enough to hold the moist cheeses.
They were used on farms throughout the 19th century (1800-1900), and the openings in the weave allowed the moisture (whey) to drain away gradually.
Today, these woven cheese molds are highly prized and make a beautiful decorative addition to Swedish country interiors.
